Centre declares NSCN(K) terrorist organisation

• The government has declared the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) a terrorist organisation under the stringent provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967

• It is the 39th outfit to enter the list, which also include the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Islamic State, Indian Mujahideen, ULFA and the al Qaeda.
• According to the notification NSCN(K) has been “consolidating its position organisationally and in terms of weapons and cadres” and resorting to terrorism.

NSCN(K)

• The NSCN(K) is a militant outfit that came into existence in 1988
• It is active along the Indo-Myanmar border, Dimapur, Mon, Longleng, Phek, Kiphire, Zunheboto and Kohima districts of Nagaland, Changlang, Longding and Tirap districts of Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Tamenglong and Senapati districts of Manipur.
• The outfit had unilaterally breached the ceasefire agreement and carried out the massacre of 18 soldiers in Manipur in June
• It has been “consolidating its position both organisationally and in terms of weapons and cadres to achieve the objective of a separate Sovereign Nagaland State, and has resorted to terrorism as a means to this end by killing innocent civilians and security forces and engaging in other violent activities including robbery, extortion, kidnapping and indiscriminate planting land mines
