• Instituted inà
• Awarded Annually on January 26 (Republic Day).
• Categories – Three-tier – Vibhushan >Bhushan > Shri
• Given Byà President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan investiture
• Received Byà Civilians (OCI exceptionally), no routine foreigners.

Fields AND SELECTION PROCESS

• Art, Literature & Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science & Engineering, Public Affairs, Civil Service, Trade & Industry.
• Selection Process àCabinet Secretary committee (Home Secretary, Presidential Secretary, 4-6 experts), PM recommendation, President approval.
• Nominationà Self-nominations on “People’s Padma” achievement proforma.
• Eligibilityà All, irrespective of race, religion, sex, occupation or position.
• Exclusions – Govt servants/PSUs except Doctors & Scientists.
• Posthumous Casesà Generally, the awards are not conferred posthumously, but exceptions are made in highly deserving cases.
