ITBP

  • ITBP is a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • It is responsible for guarding the India–China border.

Area of Responsibility

  • Guards 3,488 km long IndiaChina border
  • From: Karakoram Pass (Ladakh) to Jachep La (Arunachal Pradesh)
  • Operates through 197 Border Outposts (BOPs)
  • Deployment altitude: 9,000 ft to 18,750 ft

Background & Formation

  • Raised in 1962 after the Sino-Indian War (1962)
  • Initially under: CRPF Act
  • Later developments: 1992 → ITBPF Act passed by Parliament
  • 1994 → Rules framed
  • 2004 → Declared full-fledged CAPF

Key Features of ITBP

  • Known as one of the most specialized mountain forces in the world
  • Operates in extreme conditions: Temperature can go below –40°C
  • Trained in: Mountaineering, Skiing, High-altitude warfare
