- Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced in the Legislative Assembly that the government plans to introduce Black Soldier Fly (BSF) composting in Bengaluru to tackle the city’s massive waste burden.
- The technique has been successfully demonstrated in Mangaluru and has received appreciation at national levels.

- BSF larval composting to be deployed as a scientific and rapid waste-processing method.
New Waste Processing Sites Identified
- North Bengaluru:
- 134 acres at Doddabelavangala (Doddaballapur)—site of the defunct Terrafirma plant.
- South Bengaluru:
- 84 acres at Gollahalli (Uttarahalli).
ABOUT BSF COMPOSTING
How It Works
- BSF larvae feed on organic waste and convert it in 7–10 days.
- Produces:
- Protein-rich larvae (used as animal feed)
- Nutrient-rich frass (organic manure)
