  • The technique has been successfully demonstrated in Mangaluru and has received appreciation at national levels.

KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Introduction of BSF Composting

  • BSF larval composting to be deployed as a scientific and rapid waste-processing method.

New Waste Processing Sites Identified

  • North Bengaluru:
    • 134 acres at Doddabelavangala (Doddaballapur)—site of the defunct Terrafirma plant.
  • South Bengaluru:
    • 84 acres at Gollahalli (Uttarahalli).

ABOUT BSF COMPOSTING

How It Works

  • BSF larvae feed on organic waste and convert it in 7–10 days.
  • Produces:
    • Protein-rich larvae (used as animal feed)
    • Nutrient-rich frass (organic manure)

Advantages

  • Reduces waste volume by 60–80%
  • Low odour, low operational cost
  • Suitable for municipal waste
  • Reduces methane emissions compared to conventional composting

Significance

  • Marks a shift towards circular, bio-based waste management.
  • Could reduce landfill pressure and promote sustainable urban governance
