DAKSHINA KANNADA DESIGNATED AS DISTRICT EXPORT HUB

NEWS

  • The Union Commerce and Industry Minister Jitin Prasada informed Lok Sabha that Dakshina Kannada (DK) of Karnataka has been designated as a District Export Hub (DEH).
  • This recognition highlights the district’s strong export base and aims to promote balanced and sustainable regional economic development.

HIGHLIGHTS

Key Focus Areas Under DEH

  • Identification of district-specific export potential, with seafood and cashew added as major export products.
  • Strengthening local industries, scaling value-addition, and improving market access for regional enterprises.
  • Enhancing participation in global trade through targeted interventions.

District Export Action Plan (DEAP)

The DEAP outlines several critical requirements to boost DK’s export ecosystem:

  • Improved logistics and connectivity, especially first-mile linkages to the New Mangalore Port.
  • Augmentation of warehousing and consolidation facilities.
  • Expansion of support infrastructure for seafood and cashew processing units.

Institutional Mechanisms Created

  • Establishment of a District Export Promotion Committee (DEPC) for coordinated action between:
    • District administration
    • Exporters and logistics agencies
    • Port authorities and customs
    • Central and state government departments
  • The DEPC ensures timely resolution of bottlenecks and alignment with infrastructure projects.

Broader Significance of the DEH Initiative

  • Acts as a consultative framework to synchronise district needs with national export infrastructure plans.
  • Supports local value-chain development, especially around New Mangalore Port.
  • Aims to make DK a competitive export cluster.
