GREEN AMMONIA

GREEN AMMONIA

NEWS: India is shifting from energy security (reliable supply) to energy independence (self-reliant clean energy). To achieve this, India is focusing on: Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia (derived from green hydrogen)

GREEN AMMONIA

  • Produced by combining: Nitrogen (from air), Green Hydrogen (produced using renewable energy via electrolysis)
  • Unlike traditional ammonia, it does NOT use fossil fuels.
  • Formula: Hydrogen (H₂) + Nitrogen (N₂) → Ammonia (NH₃)

IMPORTANT IN ENERGY TRANSITION?

  • Wide Applications: Fertilizers (India’s biggest use), clean fuel (shipping & marine fuel), power generation
  • Green ammonia is currently leading the adoption of green hydrogen globally

INDIA’S GREEN AMMONIA AUCTION

  • Conducted by: SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India)
  • Under: SIGHT Programme, National Green Hydrogen Mission

Key Features:

  • Tender for 724,000 tonnes/year green ammonia
  • Supply to 13 fertilizer plants
  • 10-year fixed price contracts
  • 15 bidders, 7 successful companies

PRICE DISCOVERY & COST COMPETITIVENESS

  • Green Ammonia Price (India Auction): ₹49.75 – ₹64.74/kg, ~$572 – $744 per tonne
  • Grey Ammonia (Fossil Fuel Based): ~$515 per tonne

GLOBAL COMPARISON

  • EU H2Global Tender
  • South Korea Clean Hydrogen Portfolio Standard (CHPS)
  • India SECI Green Ammonia Auction (SIGHT Programme)
    • India’s auction prices are 40–50% cheaper than EU’s H2Global auction → Major achievement.

ROLE IN INDIA’S ENERGY TRANSITION

  • Decarbonising fertilizer industry (major emitter)
  • Clean fuel for shipping sector
  • Industrial decarbonisation
  • Achieving Net Zero targets
  • Reducing fossil fuel imports
