HEALTH RISKS FOR KASHMIR’S APPLE ORCHARD WORKERS FROM PESTICIDE EXPOSURE
HEALTH RISKS FOR KASHMIR’S APPLE ORCHARD WORKERS FROM PESTICIDE EXPOSURE
NEWS – Kashmir’s apple industry contributes 75–78% of India’s apple production and is the backbone of the Valley’s economy. However, prolonged and unsafe pesticide exposure among orchard workers has raised serious occupational health concerns.
HIGHLIGHTS
Key Findings
- Concerns do not affect consumers eating apples; risks are limited to those directly exposed.
- Studies at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) found:
- Higher incidence of malignant brain tumours among orchard workers and nearby residents.
- Trace pesticide residues detected in blood samples of exposed individuals.
Why the Concern?
Workers face prolonged exposure to hazardous chemicals such as:
- Chlorpyrifos
- Mancozeb
- Captan
These pesticides are internationally flagged for:
- Neurotoxicity
- Carcinogenic potential
Health Impacts Reported
- Chronic respiratory problems
- Skin irritation and rashes
- Kidney & metabolic dysfunction signs
- Long-term cancer risks
Practices Increasing Risk
- Spraying every 10–12 days during growing season
- Poor access to protective equipment (masks, gloves, suits)
- Lack of awareness on safe handling
- Pesticide runoff affecting soil & water
Recommendations by Expert Panel
- Regular health screening for workers
- Strict pesticide application monitoring
- Training on safe handling practices
- Affordable access to protective gear
- Long-term epidemiological research
- Promotion of safer pesticide alternatives
