ITBP
- ITBP is a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
- It is responsible for guarding the India–China border.
Area of Responsibility
- Guards 3,488 km long IndiaChina border
- From: Karakoram Pass (Ladakh) ➝ to ➝ Jachep La (Arunachal Pradesh)
- Operates through 197 Border Outposts (BOPs)
- Deployment altitude: 9,000 ft to 18,750 ft
Background & Formation
- Raised in 1962 after the Sino-Indian War (1962)
- Initially under: CRPF Act
- Later developments: 1992 → ITBPF Act passed by Parliament
- 1994 → Rules framed
- 2004 → Declared full-fledged CAPF

- Known as one of the most specialized mountain forces in the world
- Operates in extreme conditions: Temperature can go below –40°C
- Trained in: Mountaineering, Skiing, High-altitude warfare
