MUSI RIVERFRONT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

NEWS: proposed by the Government of Telangana aims to rejuvenate the Musi River in Hyderabad and transform its banks intourban public spaces

About the Musi River

  • Important river flowing through Hyderabad.
  • Source: Ananthagiri Hills
  • Flows eastward through Hyderabad city
  • Historically divided Old City and New City of Hyderabad
  • The Musi is formed by the merging of two rivulets: Musa, Esi
  • Two important Reservoirs were constructed on the Musi River: Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar

Major Proposals of the Project

  • Development along both sides of the riverà Around 55 km stretch
  • Creation of: Leisure spaces, Shopping areas, Heritage structures, Public parks
  • Ensure year-round water flow
  • Large sewage treatment expansion: 39 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) in addition to 31 existing STPs

Key Concerns

  • Forced evictions of slum residents
  • Lack of public access to the DPR
  • Fear that riverbank communities will be displaced
  • Land acquisition notices issued for the ‘Gandhi Sarovar’ cultural precinct
