NEWS: proposed by the Government of Telangana aims to rejuvenate the Musi River in Hyderabad and transform its banks intourban public spaces
About the Musi River
- Important river flowing through Hyderabad.
- Source: Ananthagiri Hills
- Flows eastward through Hyderabad city
- Historically divided Old City and New City of Hyderabad
- The Musi is formed by the merging of two rivulets: Musa, Esi
- Two important Reservoirs were constructed on the Musi River: Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar
Major Proposals of the Project
- Development along both sides of the riverà Around 55 km stretch
- Creation of: Leisure spaces, Shopping areas, Heritage structures, Public parks
- Ensure year-round water flow
- Large sewage treatment expansion: 39 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) in addition to 31 existing STPs
Key Concerns
- Forced evictions of slum residents
- Lack of public access to the DPR
- Fear that riverbank communities will be displaced
- Land acquisition notices issued for the ‘Gandhi Sarovar’ cultural precinct
