- Scientists have set out to explore the medicinal properties of the Ganga water
- This will help to either use the pristine water or elements isolated from it in clinical therapies.
- While four laboratories under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research have begun the work, Indian Council of Medical Research, Indian Institutes of Technologies at Kanpur and Roorkee, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi and Benaras Hindu University would join hands in what could eventually turn out to be a national programme.
- The research on the non-putrefying properties of the Ganga water would be funded by the Centre
- Several scientists researching on the “special power” of Ganga water suggest presence of high-concentration of many varieties of bacteriophage – a type of virus that eats bacteria – behind its non-putrefying properties.
- Others believe in the existence of an unknown agent or ‘mystery factor’. The mystery factor gives the Ganga an unusual ability to retain dissolved oxygen from atmosphere
- The NEERI has been tasked by the water resource ministry to study the special properties of the Ganga water. The institute roped in three other CSIR laboratories and sampled the Ganga water at 154 places for the analysis spanning over three seasons. ICMR will undertake a concerted effort for a national level programme to understand the properties of Ganga water
- Based on his research, C S Nautiyal, director of the National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, claimed the Ganga water has certain novel anti-microbial attributes, which may provide clues for the development of new antibiotics. The NBRI research findings, however, have not yet been published in a peer reviewed scientific journal.
